What keeps us happy and healthy as we go through life? If you think it’s fame and money, you’re not alone – but, according to psychiatrist Robert Waldinger, you’re mistaken. As the director of 75-year-old study on adult development, Waldinger has unprecedented access to data on true happiness and satisfaction. In this talk, he shares three important lessons learned from the study as well as some practical, old-as-the-hills wisdom on how to build a fulfilling, long life.

  1. A young fisherman is singing to his kids while sitting on the dock. A business man comes by and sees a half empty bucket of fish. He goes to the fisher and says “why aren’t you fishing?” The young man says “I’ve fished enough to feed my family”. The business man says “you should fish more”. The young man says “for what?” The older man says “so you can buy a bigger boat and catch more fish”. The young fisher says “then what?”. The older man says “so you can have enough money to start a company” “then what?” Says the young man. “Then you can have enough money to have a huge business”. Again the young man says “then what?” The older man replies “then you can retire and enjoy life by the sea with your children” the young man says “what do you think I’m doing now?” And resumes his singing.

  2. yes we are social beings but relationships don't always necessarily matter. what is more important for me is your ralationship with yourself. as long as you are at peace with yourself, that for me is enough. more than enough. not that i advocate for people not to be in relationahips. we have family, friends, classmates, officemates. it's part of life. yes it's healthy to have good relationships with others but it is much healthier to have a good relationship with one's self. that is just me and it works fine. i may be alone but not lonely.

  3. That's why every woman I've ever known always has a 'best friend', somebody they feel a strong emotional connection with, somebody they can talk to and share their feelings with, somebody who'll listen to them and support them. They're hard-wired to do this I believe and society encourages them so it's really no surprise that they're good at this. The Guys are so far behind the girls in this respect and it's killing them. This has to change Guys, why, because we are worth it.

  4. Nearly ninety percent of the global population is working tirelessly throughout their life in order to repay their outstanding loans and for their own survival……Only a very limited percentage of the global population is considered rich……As a matter of fact, a lot of people are participating in online lotteries, in the hope of winning big prizes, but, the chances of winning are very low…….Money making is one of the biggest challenges faced by most people, and ninety percent of people often end up in failure……Some people don’t know how to manage their money and due to this, they become financially drained in course of time…..

  5. So basically as a woman, you have no idea what makes me happy…. just men. Forgive me if I find the study less than exciting. Thank goodness we have better guidelines in place for current research studies.

  6. being selfless with peace of mind, work to have a decent life but not over work because everything in this world is temporary you cant bring your stuff when you die. just enjoy today because tomorrow is always a mystery.
